- In September the number of equity trades represented the best monthly figure in 2009, up 33.3% from August at 3.06 million.
- Options on Stocks: quarterly record high, at 8.8 million contracts, up 131% from the same 2008 quarter.
- Trading volume on the Corporate Debt market since January came in at €2.87 trillion, up 92.7% from the same period a year earlier.
Equities
In September the Spanish market traded 7.75 billion shares, which represents a 19.4% decrease from the same month in 2008 but up 16% from the previous month. The number of shares traded to the end of September totalled 82.06 billion, down 0.3% from the same period in 2008.
The number of trades came in at 3.06 million, the best monthly figure in 2009 and down 9.59% from the same month in 2008. The number of trades to the end of September totalled 23.23 million, down 14.7% from the same period a year earlier.
The equity trading volume in September came in at €65.61, down 35.5% from the same month a year earlier. The trading volume to the end of September totalled €638 billion, down 35.5% from the same period a year earlier.
The number of trades on the ETF segment to the end of September totalled 36,649, up 125% from the same period a year earlier. In September the number of trades was up 173% from the same period in 2008, at 4,946. The trading volume on this segment in September came in at €280.2 million and in the first nine months of the year it totalled €2.37 billion.
Futures and Options
In September trading on MEFF, BME’s Derivatives Market, came in at 7.6 million contracts, with heavy trading in Options on Stocks, at 4.4 million contracts, up 136% from September last year.
In the third quarter of 2009, Options on Stocks grew by 131% from the same quarter in 2008, reaching a quarterly record high, at 8.8 million contracts, the figure also exceeding the previous record high for the first quarter of 2001.
The trading volume on this market to the end of September totalled 73.7 million contracts, up 20% from the same period in 2008. Highlights include Options on Stocks, at 24.8 million contracts, up 107% from a year earlier and Stock Futures, at 39.1 million contracts, up 11% from the same period a year earlier.
Warrants and Certificates
The number of warrants traded to the end of September totalled 5,458. The trading volume in September on the warrants and certificates market came in at €137.3 million, down 49% from the same month a year earlier and up 18.2% from the previous month. The number of trades was 29,013, down 49.5% from the same period a year ago and up 28.7% from the previous month.
The trading volume to the end of September totalled €1.41 bn, down 38.2% from the same period in 2008 and the number of trades during the same period came in at 276,938, down 37% from the same period a year earlier.
Corporate Debt
Corporate Debt trading on BME’s Corporate Debt Market, AIAF, to the end of September totalled €2.87 trillion, up 92.7% from the same period a year earlier. The trading volume in September reached €241.67 bn, up 42.3% from the same period a year earlier.
New issues to the end of September came in at €320.01 bn, down 10.1% from the same period in 2008. New issues in September totalled €19.53 bn, down 20.8% from September 2008.
The outstanding balance of Corporate Debt at the end of September was €887.60 bn, up 9.2% from the same period a year earlier.
