The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) and Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad (Bursa Malaysia)
will hold for the first time Malaysia’s Corporate Governance Week in a major initiative to advance
the country’s CG agenda by reinforcing the importance of good governance among capital market
practitioners.
The SC Chairman, Dato’ Sri Zarinah Anwar, will be officiating the inaugural CG Week. She will
also join Chairman of Bursa Malaysia, Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Bin Haji Abdullah in launching Bursa
Malaysia’s guide on CG best practices as well as the enhanced Regulation section of the Bursa
Malaysia website.
The CG Week will feature a series of insightful discussions, forums and plenary sessions to
deliberate on various key CG issues. Participating organisations include the Minority Shareholders
Watchdog Group (MSWG), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Malaysian Alliance of
Corporate Directors (MACD), Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators
(MAICSA), Malaysian Institute of Integrity, Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), Institute of
Internal Auditors Malaysia (IIAM) and Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance (MICG).
Among the topics to be covered are ‘The Role of Market Players in Influencing Good CG
Practices amongst PLCs’, ‘Governance and Sustainability Reporting: Is there a link?’, ‘Raising the
Bar for Corporate Directors Toward Global Competitiveness’, ‘Company Secretary’s Role Towards
Governance’ and many more.
Dato’ Sri Zarinah said that the CG Week, which is being held in such form for the first time
in Malaysia, underlines the strong commitment by the SC, Bursa Malaysia and other CG advocates and
proponents in propelling the CG agenda forward.
“In today’s environment, companies are increasingly being judged by consumers, investors, and
the community on their perceived corporate morality. Good corporate governance is a proxy to the
world regarding the quality of the board and management of the company. It demonstrates commitment
to creating enhanced shareholder value.” Dato’ Sri Zarinah said.
“The CG Week will see participation of various industry experts who will share their ideas
with directors and stakeholders on current issues and challenges relating to CG. We see this
as an avenue to cast greater highlight on the significance of CG for sustainable business practices
which bodes well for market integrity,” said Dato’ Yusli Mohamed Yusoff, Chief Executive Officer of
Bursa Malaysia.
